Religious rituals cannot replace Repentance
Matthew 9:13. But go ye and learn what this meaneth: `I will have mercy and not sacrifice.- For I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance."
Jesus challenges the religious mindset of the Pharisees, who placed a great emphasis on following the rules and performing religious duties, such as offering sacrifices, as a means of earning God-s favor. Jesus, however, emphasizes that what God desires most is a heart of mercy and compassion towards others, particularly towards those who are in need of grace and forgiveness.
One can easily get caught up in religious practices and rituals, or to judge others based on their outward appearance or behavior. But Jesus reminds us that what truly matters is the state of our hearts and our willingness to extend mercy and grace to those around us.
Furthermore, Jesus declares that he did not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance. This means that no matter how good or righteous we may think we are, we all stand in need of God-s grace and forgiveness. And it is only through recognizing our own need for mercy that we can extend it to others.
