Simon the Zealot: Embracing Kingdom Beyond Earthly Commitments
"Jesus said to him, -If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.-" - Matthew 16:24
Simon, also referred to as Simon the Cananaean, is a name often overlooked among the New Testament apostles. Yet, his inclusion among the twelve speaks volumes of his devotion to Jesus.
It has been speculated that Simon may have been a part of the Zealot movement, a group of passionate Jewish nationalists known for their strong resistance against Roman rule. If this is true, Simon-s journey alongside Jesus would have required a dramatic transformation of his beliefs and values.
Simon-s bold choice to become a follower of Jesus amidst the chaos and upheaval of his time speaks volumes about his openness to a new reign—one that revolves around the person of Jesus Christ rather than earthly power or principles. Despite the political and social pressures of his era, Simon-s unwavering faith in Jesus as the true King and Messiah surpassed any earthly loyalties and beliefs.
Although Simon may not have a prominent presence in the Gospel accounts compared to some of the other apostles, his unwavering commitment to Jesus and his role in spreading the Good News are undeniably significant. Along with the other apostles, Simon witnessed Jesus- miracles, absorbed His teachings, and personally experienced His boundless love. While on a mission journey for the Gospel in Egypt, later during 65 AD in Lebanon, he was martyred by being cut in half with a saw,
Simon-s journey prompts us to reflect on our own loyalties and values. Will we forsake our predetermined beliefs and earthly pursuits in order to wholeheartedly follow Jesus? Are we ready to fully embrace His kingdom and His principles, even if it means going against the popular current?
Simon-s life reminds us that being a true follower of Jesus demands a radical obedience and a readiness to submit our own agendas to His. May we, like Simon, be willing to lay down everything - our own desires, goals, and convictions - in submission to Jesus, trusting in His supremacy and His flawless blueprint for our lives.
